Q&A
Q1. Why do you choose photography as your career and form of expression?
It was not a conscious decision. I was always interested in the arts, I took singing lessons, dance and music classes from a very young age. The thing is, the moment I took a camera in my hands my life lit up. It was a very random way that I started taking a photography course. I was in a ballet lesson which was held in a multidisciplinary center, and in the afternoon they used to have these photography workshops. I decided to buy a camera and take the course, and I realised it was something that flowed within me very naturally. That is when I decided to make a career out of it.
I studied photography in Mexico during 3 years in 2011, and since then I’ve worn it like a tattoo on my heart, there is not a day I wake up and do not have that latent desire.
Q2. Where does the project «Aún no tengo un título» (“I still don’t have a title”) come from? What is in there from Carla the photographer and what can we discover about Carla the person?
It comes from the anxiety of change and being so far from home.
In this project I had two things clear from the beginning: aesthetics brought to fashion, that is, a flash and grey scale. At the end of the day I am a fashion photographer and that comes from my love for aesthetics, for what is pleasing to the eye.
I remember a teacher that I had during my degree and now I understand the comment she used to make to me: I was taking very nice pictures but there wasn’t a story behind them. So I decided to make a statement as an artist, if I was already giving it to aesthetics, I was determined to also know how to assertively communicate something very intimate, sensations or thoughts that go through my head in my day to day and that generate conflict, concern or perhaps also pleasure within the process of change; and here is where I perhaps can find the foundation to go through it all.
Q3. Which other projects are you particularly proud of and would you recommend we take a look at?
I have an editorial called “Natural Luxury” on my website that was also published online on Kluid Magazine in which I also find, so to speak, a refuge, as I went to the process of retouching with a lot of care and patience. I love editing skin, I could say it is a way of meditation for me to retouch my photographs.
P1. ¿Por qué eliges la fotografía como carrera y forma de expresión?
No fue una decisión consciente. A mí desde siempre me llamaron las artes, tomé clases de canto, clases de danza y música desde muy pequeña. La cosa fue que cuando tomé una cámara en mis manos, se me iluminó la vida. Fue de una manera muy random que llegué a un curso de fotografía. Yo estaba tomando clases de ballet en un centro multidisciplinario y por las tardes daban talleres de foto, decidí comprarme una cámara para tomarlo y cuando me di cuenta de que era algo que fluía en mi de manera muy natural fue cuando decidí hacer carrera en esto.
Estudié por tres años fotografía en ciudad de México en 2011 y desde entonces lo he llevado como un tatuaje en mi corazón, no hay día en que me despierte y no tenga ese deseo tan latente.
P2 ¿De dónde surge el proyecto «Aún no tengo un título»? ¿Qué hay ahí de Carla fotógrafa y qué podemos descubrir sobre Carla persona?
Surge de la ansiedad al cambio y estar tan lejos de casa.
En este proyecto tenía claras dos cosas desde un principio: la estética llevada a la moda, es decir un flashazo y la escala de grises. Al final soy fotógrafa de moda y viene de mi amor por la estética, por lo agradable a la vista.
Recuerdo muy bien a una maestra que tuve en la carrera que ahora a la fecha entiendo de dónde venía su comentario, me decía que hacia fotos muy bonitas pero que no le contaban nada. Entonces decidí que también quería tener un statement como artista. Si ya la estética me lo estaba dando, estaba decidida a también saber comunicar de manera asertiva algo muy íntimo, sensaciones o pensamientos que me pasan por la cabeza en mi día a día y que me generan conflicto, preocupación o quizá también placer dentro del proceso del cambio y aquí es donde quizá encuentro el sustento para atravesarlo.
P3. ¿De qué otros proyectos te sientes especialmente orgullosa y nos recomiendas echar un vistazo?
Tengo una editorial llamada «Natural Luxury» colgada en mi web pero también publicada en la revista online (Kluid Magazine) en la cual también encuentro, por así decirlo, como un refugio al haberla retocado con mucha paciencia y cuidado. Me encanta editar pieles, así que podría decir que es una manera de meditar para mí el retocar mis fotos.
